ARR, TCV and ACV: definitions and reconciliation

How ARR, TCV and ACV are defined, and why each must be calculated the same way in the source and the target.

Three measures of contract value appear in Salesforce data, and each organization may calculate at least one of them differently from the next. The definitions below are the ones ordinarily applied; the first task in any engagement is to confirm them with the client and to compute each for both the source and the target under the same definition, since the source's own figures were frequently computed under a different one. Salesforce gives a general account of annual recurring revenue.

MeasureDefinitionExample
ARR (annual recurring revenue)Monthly net price multiplied by twelve, or by the contract term in months where the term is shorter than a year.A six-month contract at $100 per month carries ARR of $600, not $1,200.
TCV (total contract value)Recurring and non-recurring revenue for the full length of the contract: monthly net price multiplied by the subscription term in months, plus one-time charges. The same contract carries TCV of $600 plus any one-time fees.
ACV (annual contract value), rampedThe total across all of a product's ramp segments, annualized, so every segment carries the same comparable annual value.Three years at $80, $100 and $120 a year produce ACV of $100 on each line.

Reconciling ARR, TCV and ACV between source and target

Reconciliation is performed line by line, and by legacy bundle where products were restructured during the migration. Every discrepancy is traced to its cause before the client is asked to review. The causes tend to recur, from date and proration differences to pricing, discount and currency treatment, and experience in recognizing them shortens every cycle.

Presenting ARR for review

ARR is typically presented to the client as a summary, calculated under the definition the client has confirmed and consistent with the other validation reports. It is tested on historical contracts and again on upcoming renewals, because the renewal is where a discrepancy in uplift or proration first becomes visible to a customer.

Annualizing ramped lines when calculating ARR in Salesforce

Platforms that manage ramps natively may not annualize ramped lines the way the business expects out of the box. Where they don't, the calculation is extended so that each ramp line carries its annualized value. The principle is the same in every platform: define the measure, compute it identically on both sides, and reconcile before anyone is asked to trust it.
